SUGAR

Sugar is an empty calorie, there are no vitamins or minerals in refined sugar. The WHO recommends that the average adult should consume no more the 6 teaspoons of sugar a day.

Sugar Fact

The average Canadian consume 26 teaspoons of sugar a day, the WHO recommends 6 teaspoons a day.

In a 12 oz can of coke there are 40 grams of sugar- 10 teaspoons

Did you know there 49 different names for sugar - making it hard to detect when reading labels.

Hidden sugars

They are most often found in sauces, condiments, pre-cooked meals and low fat pastries.

Consequences of a high sugar diet

  1. It can lead to type 2 diabetes
  2. Over time the liver functions diminish and it becomes 'fatty' 
  3. This leads to an accumulation of toxines in the body - creating more problems
  4. It has been known to lead to depression and anxiety
  5. Can also lead to high blood pressure

Tips on how to diminish sugar intake

Eating 3 meals a day and reducing the snacks in bewteen

Try making a few meals from scratch - pre-packaged food and sauces contain sugar

Eat more whole wheat pasta and rice instead of the refined version

Using honey as a sweetener can help, as it still contains minerals and vitamins
